Red Cross launches fundraising initiative to help families | News
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS)- As a part of Fire Prevention Month, the Red Cross of Central South Carolina hopes to raise $160,000 to help families affected by home fires.
"Home fires can have a devastating effect on families," said Bill Cronin, executive director of the Central South Carolina Red Cross chapter. "The Red Cross is there to help in a time of need and part of our job is to help families impacted by a fire."
Cronin said the work done by the Red Cross is vital and without the community's support the Red Cross could not continue its mission.
The "Fire Hurts. Red Cross Helps" fundraising initiative will run from October through January when statically most home fires occur, officials said.
"It takes $1,250 to help a family of four," Cronin said. "Every dollar counts and the money raised will go directly to helping families in our region."
Because of trained disaster volunteers and financial assistance from the community, Red Cross has been able to help more than 3,800 individuals and 1,200 families affected by disasters in the Palmetto SC region since January 1.
On average, the American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours.
The Palmetto SC Region is made up of seven Red Cross chapters spanning 35-counties of South Carolina.
Anyone interested in donating to "Fire Hurts. Red Cross Helps." can make a financial contribution to the American Red Cross by visiting Redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Donations may also be mailed to one of the American Red Cross Palmetto SC Region seven Red Cross Chapters.
