COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Local farmers know the power of the incredible edible egg and for the fifth year in a row they've teamed up with Feeding America for a one day egg blitz to area food banks.
"It's high protein, good quality product. We are very happy to get it," Harvest Hope CEO Chris Daly said about eggs.
The shipment came in to the food bank Tuesday afternoon.
"They travel well despite what people might think," Daly said. "They are fragile, but we get the eggs and they are in great shape."
Tuesday's shipment included 140,000 eggs. To put that number in perspective, if the shipment were to go one person, you could have one egg 3 days per week for the next 127 years.
Fortunately, the eggs will be distributed to families who need help getting by. "We'll distribute all of them in a matter of 2 days," Daly said.
Waking up to a plate of fresh eggs may seem like a small treat, but it means a lot to people who are struggling day-to-day.
"They are folks who find themselves one day in our pantry and they never thought they'd be there," Daly said.
Whether you choose an omelet or piece of quiche, eggs are a great source of protein and provide 13 essential vitamins and minerals.
"We have a very strong dedication to having good, fresh food to deliver to the clients and the agencies that serves the clients," Daly said.
Since 2008, nearly 50 million dozen eggs have been donated to local food banks as part of the initiative.
