Benedict College Celebrates Black History Month

Benedict College will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events and activities highlighting and honoring the role and impact of African Americans throughout this country’s history. A full schedule of lectures, musical events, workshops, and programs that focus on the culture of history of the African-American community is scheduled throughout the month of February. Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Black History Month is a time set aside to reflect on the history and legacy of African Americans in the United States. In the course of the last three hundred plus years, African Americans have made countless contributions to the fabric of this nation. Their toil, talent, brilliance, and courage are inspiring to current and future generations.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH ESSAY CONTEST

Beginning February 1st and continuing until February 15th, the Social Sciences and Criminal Justice will hold a Black History Month essay contest.  Prizes will be presented to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.  Contest rules will be available on February 1st in the Department of Social Sciences and Criminal Justice, FAH 300.  For more information, please contact Dr. Jackie Booker at (803) 705-4564.

 

HARAMBEE FESTIVAL COMMUNITY CHOIR CONCERT --FEBRUARY 24, 2013

The Invitation:  You are invited to sing on what will be one of the most amazing choirs in South Carolina, featuring renowned gospel recording artist, The Reverend Luther Barnes, as guest clinician.  Seats on the choir are available to all who wish to participate, attend the rehearsals, learn from the best, provide a sneak preview at the Harambee Festival on February 23rd, and participate in a full concert on February 24th.  (See February 24, 2013 for details on how to sign up.)

TELECONFERENCE

The 26th Annual Benedict College Black History Teleconference

The 26th Annual Benedict College Black History Teleconference will be held live on the campus of Benedict College. This year presents an exciting time to commemorate the 150th year of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th year since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the March on Washington, D.C. It features high school and Benedict College students who will direct questions to prominent African Americans about their ideas, challenges, and lifetime achievements.  High school students participating are from A.C. Flora, C. A. Johnson, Lower Richland, Eau Claire, and W. J. Keenan High Schools.

 

Confirmed guest panelists are Mr. Jonathan Green, Professional Artist; Mrs. Robin Beaman, President, Beaman Inc.; Mrs. Shondia Sabari, Inspirational Speaker; Mr. DeMaurice Smith, Director, National Football League Players Association (NFLPA); and Mr. Jesse E. Russell, CEO/Inventor, IncNETWORKS, Inc.   The program airs in South Carolina on ETV on February 24, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. It will be offered to school districts, colleges, universities, and public television stations nationwide through the satellite February 18, 2013. Her topic is entitled “The Emerging Role of Women in the Social and Economic Development of African Countries.” This multicultural program expands the cultural horizons of our academic community, provides historical context to the Africa to America continuum, and gives current political and social perspectives on the roles of women in African society.

THE HARAMBEE FESTIVAL

This festival is one of the largest College-sponsored festivals in the nation.  It is an annual event for the entire family that has plenty of food, music, fun, art, and those hard-to-find merchandise items in the Shopping Village. The KIJIJI Children’s Village will feature scientific experiments, virtual classrooms, educational enrichment, and dance lessons.  Other events include outside activities for the children and bounce houses.  Additionally, there will be free play checkers.

 

Live stage performances are scheduled throughout the day to include the national award winning Benedict College Gospel Choir and a special appearance by the Harambee Festival Community Choir featuring the Reverend Luther Barnes and various other performances.  Free Admission.   Call (803) 705-4409 for additional information and to register as a merchandise or food vendor.

THE FIRST ANNUAL HARAMBEE FESTIVAL CAR AND BIKE SHOW

Participants in this highly anticipated event include Vettes are Forever, Carolina Classic Car Motor Club, Midland Cruisers, Diamond Riders, and the Motorcycle Social and Auto Clubs Alliances of South Carolina (MSAASC).  This event will be held in the parking lot of the Allen University Campus Mall from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  This event is free and open to the public.

RESUME WRITING AND MATHEMATICS MANIPULATIVE WORKSHOP

Take a workshop in resume writing and mathematics manipulatives.  Learn techniques and rules of resume writing; use a formula for job application letter; and learn how to continue to assess and revise employment application writing for career goals and skills enhancement.
